Dead GFX Card Empty Dead GFX Card

Post by Harlequin 2012-07-09, 9:42 pm

Got home from work tonight to see my wife and kids huddled around the computer. When I asked what was going on they all jumped back and said "it just stopped working...". "NOOOOOOOO!!!"

I think its the GPU. MB beeps once, drives look to be working. USB devices seem to power up (eventually). Took out the GPU and got a single long beep and 3 short beeps suggesting the CPU and RAM are not the issue. Any advice? Tried another PCI slot. Out of other ideas. Don't have another comp to try the card in. F'n shit F.

If the GFX card may be toast, remove it, then plug your monitor into the normal tower monitor plug in. If everything runs, then it's the GFX card, if it doesn't then your screwed, lol

I don't think this is a GFX card issue.

PSU? That's why I tried without the GPU, maybe not good enough of a test? Is odd that it seems to be taking so long for my USB stuff to be powering up. Fucked if I know. Goddammit! I wanna fly!!!

You have absolutely no other system?? Yes could be PSU. Could be Mobo also. Hard to tell.

Do you have PC Doctor or something similar on your system?? You need to run Diagnostics to have it figure out what's going wrong.

You also should check the 24 Pin connector from your PSU to your Mobo, remove it and re-seat it. In the past I had an issue like that, it caused windows beep errors and system shut downs.

Just trying to cover the bases. Also, bad memory, a diagnostic will reveal that, or you can take each out one at a time and check it that way.

I'd run diagnostics first before disassembling.

I still don't get it according to your PM at BMS.

You still believe it is the GPU. I said last night, the GPU cannot stop your computer from booting, you just won't see any video on your monitor but it should still boot.

To figure out right off the bat if the GPU is fried, just take it out and plug your monitor into your Mobo chipset I/O Monitor input. Do you not have a Mobo I/O monitor input??

If everything works then I'd say yes, GPU.

You're right, might not be the GPU. I don't have integrated video on my MB though. Going to try piece by piece tonight and reset the CMOS.

This sucks. Sad

OMG... got 'er sorted. It was a monitor issue. But check out the solution:

"Kareem Mar 27, 2009 5:50pm GMT
I KNOW THE SOLUTION

REMOVE YOUR POWER CORD AND HOLD THE ON BUTTON FOR LIKE 30second TO A MINUTE AND THEN CONNECT IT BACK AND TURN IT ON"

Are you kidding me? Worked like a charm... i could strangle someone... starting, of course, with myself.

Yeah, I forgot about that with the monitor. Actually now that you posted it, that's probably the same solution for my LCD that was giving me trouble.

It gave me trouble a while back so I disconnected it and went back to this CRT. Well when I moved here the same thing happened again.

I'll have to give it a shot after work tomorrow. Would be nice to have the LCD back.

All seems to be good. I followed up with my buddy that works at AMD. The monitor obviously went on the fritz, but he suggested that uplugging it and holding the power button likely drains all the capacitors and allows a "fresh start" for the monitor when you plug it back in.

I could care less... as long as it's working! I was able to turn it off and on again without issue... so i think i'm back in business. Smile
